The Charter of Budget Honesty Act 1998 (the Charter) outlines arrangements under which the Secretary to the Treasury and Secretary of the Department of Finance may be requested to cost the election commitments of the Government, Opposition and minority parties with five or more members during the caretaker period prior to a general election. The Charter requires that costings be publicly released as soon as practicable after a costing request has been made, generally within five business days, and before polling day.
All requests for costings, completed costings and related information will be published at www.electioncostings.gov.au during the caretaker period.
Organisations and individuals may subscribe to the Finance and Treasury X accounts to receive alerts on all new material posted to the website, including requests for costings from the parties and costings completed by the departments.
Media releases will not be delivered in hard copy to Parliament House press boxes.
Further information on the costing of election commitments may be found in the Charter of Budget Honesty: Policy Costing Guidelines – 2024 which are available at www.electioncostings.gov.au
